In the Human Nutrition stream, the graduates will have the knowledge and skills relevant for working as a qualified nutritionist in the area of human nutrition, and also in a variety of nutrition-related areas such as public health, food and/or health industries, the media, nutrition policy development, teaching and research for health and education services, sports nutrition or other organizations

The public health significance of diet and nutrition throughout the life course on the health of the nation is widely acknowledged by medical and allied health professions based upon constantly emerging epidemiological research data. This study programme critically explores the relationships between diet, health and wellbeing through the life course of both the individual and at the community and population level.
Master’s programmes in Human Nutrition integrates novel and emerging policy, practice and sustainability issues relating to diet for health, using nutrition in practice to determine dietary needs, practice and advice. This programme aims to develop an advanced understanding of the principles of nutrition and enables students to scientifically evaluate the links between diet, health and disease. Postgraduate training provides students with a broad understanding of the principles of nutrition, their applications and a distinct range of skills to increase the effectiveness and quality of service delivery in relevant professions.
The students will also learn about the biological, social and policy related aspects of human nutrition along with skills to evaluate the findings of human nutrition studies and undertaking research. This programme in nutrition is designed to attract Bachelor of Science graduates and related bachelors from a range of disciplines where students show an aptitude for human nutrition and health. A graduate of the programme will be qualified to register within the professional framework for a Registered Nutritionist.
The candidate must possess the following:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of study obtained from a recognized University;
Relevant areas of study include:

– physiology

– allied health science
– food science
– microbiology
– sports and exercise science
OR
A Bachelor’s degree in any other area of study not listed above obtained from a recognized University with significant nutrition-related work experience (paid or voluntary) within a health or social care setting acceptable to the BoS and Senate.
OR
A professional qualification in a health-related field recognized by a professional body, together with at least seven (7) years of experience in a relevant field acceptable to the BoS and Senate.
Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes
Aims of the Programme
- Developing critical awareness and a deep comprehensive understanding of theoretical knowledge and skills in nutrition.
- Developing a creative, critical, and analytical approach to the application of knowledge in the field of nutrition
- Developing a critical awareness and deep comprehension of the evidence base and application of nutrition to practice
- Designing and undertaking research in the area of nutrition
Programme Structure
MSc in Human Nutrition will take two (2) academic years as a full-time student and the part-time route will take three (3) academic years. The maximum registration period for the full-time registrant is four (4) academic years and five (5) academic years for the part-time student. The MSc degree program comprises coursework in the first year (minimum 30 credits) and a research component (dissertation; 30 credits) in the second year.
Master of Human Nutrition comprises coursework (minimum 31 credits) including an Independent Study. The full-time route will take one (1) academic year and the part-time route will take two (2) academic years. The maximum registration period for the full-time registrant is three (3) academic years and four (4) academic years for the part-time student.

After completing the MSc/ Master of Human Nutrition, the following career options are available:
- Academic positions in university settings, e.g. lecturer, researcher
- Nutritionists in government institutes
- Nutrition Programme Coordinator and Manager in Development agencies and nongovernmental organizations
- Food/nutrition industries
- Private freelance practice
- Sports nutritionist
Successful completion of this programme may provide a pathway to a graduate research degree (MPhil / PhD) both locally and internationally.
