In the Global Public Health Nutrition stream, the students will become experts in diet and nutrition who work to improve public and community nutritional habits instead of working one on one with individual clients. They are usually registered as Nutritionists / Public Health Nutritionists and will focus on helping to implement strategies for a community or for a large organization that will improve the nutrition of the population, and thus have a positive influence on the population’s health and well-being.

The Master programme in Global Public Health Nutrition is designed to give students a broad introduction to public health while equipping them with the skills and knowledge to define, critically assess and resolve public health nutrition issues within a community.
This integrated programme covers epidemiological, dietary, public health, social and biological aspects of nutritional science. Specialist topics include: maternal and child nutrition; nutrition in emergencies; nutrition programme planning, evaluation and monitoring; nutrition-related chronic disease.
The main programme focus is on nutritional problems in low and middle-income countries – although skills and learning outcomes are widely applicable to all populations globally.
This programme allows students to develop, analyse and implement policy, plan and evaluate health services and programmes whilst catering for their individual career goals. The program is structured in a manner that responds to the constantly changing health and social issues both at local and international levels.
The candidate must possess the following:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of study obtained from a recognized University;
Relevant areas of study include:
– human nutrition
– nutritional science
– biomedical science
– biochemistry
– physiology
– human biology
– allied health science
– food science
– microbiology
– sports and exercise science
OR
A Bachelor’s degree in any other area of study not listed above obtained from a recognized University with significant nutrition-related work experience (paid or voluntary) within a health or social care setting acceptable to the BoS and Senate.
OR
A professional qualification in a health-related field recognized by a professional body, together with at least seven (7) years of experience in a relevant field acceptable to the BoS and Senate.
Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes
Aims of the Programme
- To equip students with specialist scientific knowledge and practical skills to engage in international public health nutrition in a range of settings
- To enhance students’ professional competency, employability and development as public health professionals that will enable students to identify and critically analyse community,national and international nutritional problems of public health significance
- To develop skills in planning and evaluating policies and programmes to address these problems, focusing on triple burden of nutrition, in an international public health context
- To enhance the transferable skills that are in demand in professional life
Programme Structure
Postgraduate students following a Master of Science in Global Public Health Nutrition will study a minimum of 31 credits in the first year.
In the second year, they have to carry out research on which the topic should be appropriate to the award, and must be agreed upon in advance with the course in charge and Board of Study and submit a dissertation (30 credits). The full-time route will take two (2) academic years and the part-time route will take three (3) academic years. The maximum registration period for the full-time registrant is four (4) academic years and five (5) academic years for the part-time student.
Postgraduate students following the Master of Global Public Health Nutrition will study a minimum of 30 credits including an Independent Study Project. The full-time route will take one (1) academic year and the part-time route will take two (2) academic years. The maximum registration period for the full-time registrant is three (3) academic years and four (4) academic years for the part-time student.

The MSc programme in Global Public Health Nutrition is designed to give students a broad introduction to public health while equipping them with the skills and knowledge to define, critically assess and resolve public health nutrition issues within a community.
Employment opportunities for international public health nutritionists are growing with new openings, for instance working as a public health nutrition adviser / programme officer with international development organisations like UNICEF, WHO, WFP, international non-governmental organizations like Save the Children, World Vision, Childfund, and local NGOs as well as in Ministries of Health, Education etc.
Successful completion of this programme may provide a pathway to a graduate research degree (MPhil / PhD), nationally and internationally.
